Student present at Plymouth Enhanced Learning Conference

On Wednesday 18th April, 8 St James students (names below) travelled to Plymouth to talk in the Student Voice Technology Showcase at the Plymouth Enhanced Learning Conference 2012 (PELeCON12 – www.pelecon.net). Unfortunately we missed our original train due to late taxis but after phoning the session organiser and changing our presentation slots, we caught the following train to Plymouth. Our students were presenting on 2 of the many exciting projects that take place at St James School. The St James Speaks online newsletter (www.stjamesspeaks.wordpress.com) written by students for students and  the WorthWhileApps (www.worthwhileapps.co.uk) work taking place in the Apps For Good (http://appsforgood.org/) afterschool club. The students created their presentations independently after I gave them a couple of bullet point headings to work with. They presented excellently, speaking clearly with excellent volume and complete confidence (something I do not think I would have been able to do at their age!). Both presentations were received positively from the audience with lots of excellent questions asked. A huge number of tweets were created about their presentations which were subsequently retweeted to an audience of thousands. Check out #pelc12 (http://twitter.com/#!/search/%23pelc12) if you are a twitter user. Both presentations are linked below, along with student versions of the afternoon.

I would like to say a huge thank you to the students for representing St James at the conference.

St James pupils’ chance to shine

HARDWORKING teenagers at St James School attended a celebratory event to mark their efforts.

The school’s Year 9 and 10 Awards Evening kicked off with drinks and canapés provided by the Year 9 Catering Team: Gemma Anderson, Bethany Baines, Kayley Barner, Ellen Canning, Jade Chapman, Lauren Coles, Lottie Cornish, Harry Crocker, George Ford, Sophie Johns, Kayleigh Lander, Katie Lewis, Rebecca Marshall, Alex Sinclair, Courtney Snell, Faye Vickery and Sophie White.

It was the turn of the Year 10s next and an address by the year group’s head of learning, Louise Telford, preceded the presentation of the Year 10 head of learning and tutor group awards.

Finally the subject awards were handed out after a presentation by students who had been on an excursion to Poland.
