St James School Challenge Partners Review

St James School Challenge Partners Review

On the 24 and 25 January St James received its first Challenge Partners Review as part of our membership of the South West Teaching Alliance. The review takes the form of an Ofsted inspection and looks at the internal judgements the school is making about achievement, the quality of teaching, leadership and behaviour. It was a very rigorous process that we found hugely supportive but also challenging.

The challenge partners now believe we are a borderline outstanding school. Below are some extracts from the report:

“St James is a school where the drive to become outstanding is palpable:

“Leaders at all levels have clear ownership and accountability for their strategic responsibility”

“The environment for learning is outstanding and inspires students and staff”

“Behaviour for learning is exemplary”

“The school has worked hard to develop and nurture a strong partnership with parents and this is now a vital aspect of the ethos at the school”

“Teaching is constantly improving”

“Overall progress in Maths is outstanding”

“Overall achievement is good and rapidly improving

This is a fantastic achievement for the school and shows how much we have improved since our last Ofsted inspection in 2009.

We now feel we have real clarity regarding the next steps to become an outstanding school when we have our next full Ofsted inspection in 2014-15. This process has again underlined what superb staff and students we have at this school and I could not be a prouder headteacher!

Rotary Youth Speaks Competition – Tuesday 5 February 2013

After two weeks of rehearsing every lunchtime the two Year 8 teams from St James School ventured off to St Luke’s College to take part in the prestigious Rotary Youth Speaks competition on a cold February night.  This was the first time St James had taken part in this event and the students and teachers really did not know what to expect. One team was made up of Joe Hall, Morrigan Hollis and Jamie Rudd, the second of Laura Bornemann Santamaria, Rachel Cantelow and Yara El-Menaywy.  On arrival we were allowed into the Hall to watch the Junior Competition which had seven teams taking part.  The talks covered topics ranging from Vikings to the Titantic through to cloning. Our teams chose to discuss Factory Farming and Natural Disasters.  Despite nerves our teams took to the floor and were fantastic representatives of our school.  They spoke with confidence and authority on their chosen subjects demonstrating maturity in their replies to the panel’s questions. The feedback we received will help us to improve the structure and content of their talks before we arrive at the next round of the competition ready to do battle on the 25 February.

If you see the six students around school please offer them your support for the next stage of their success!
