For the third consecutive time, St James receive the British Council International School Award 2014-2017

Posted in: Latest News on Monday, September 15th, 2014
International award

Staff and students at St James are celebrating after being accredited with the British Council International School Award 2014-2017; an award that they have held now since 2008 in recognition of the school’s commitment to ensuring that cultural diversity is celebrated and that students become global citizens, fully aware of the world and the positive impact they can have on it.

The report from the British Council on giving the award states: “It is very encouraging to see the level of commitment and passion that you [St James] have dedicated to your international education programme over the years that you have been engaged in it. Every activity is completely cross-curricular and they are all appropriately linked with global themes that have resulted in this excellent work. Your ability to embed internationalism into your curriculum in such an apparently effortless manner clearly demonstrates your understanding of the principles and mechanisms of international learning… Your school is a very good example of how to guide your international work through clearly planned and delivered activities across an extensive cross-curricular platform.”

The report also drew attention to the work of St James within the local community: “You have done very well in disseminating good practice to your international and local partner schools. Your status as an ambassadorial school is further strengthened by your efforts to encourage other schools to embrace international education … In fact, your readiness to extend your current success to a wider network of schools is commendable, and your ideas and activities for enriching the curriculum are a credit to your school.”

Helen Stephenson, Ethnic Minority Achievement Coordinator, said of the award, “St James has a number of international partner schools including those taking part in the Comenius Project from Denmark, Germany, Hungary and Spain, our Japanese partner school that visits annually and our long term partnership with St Joseph’s in Sri Lanka. In addition, lessons across all curriculum areas incorporate a global perspective and are underpinned with an all-inclusive, multicultural set of values. Receiving this award recognises this philosophy and approach, as well as our commitment to sharing our International School work with the local community through our Youth Cultural Champions programme and our calendar of school-based international events. ”

Moira Marder, Headteacher at St James, said of the award, “This is a fantastic accolade, and a true recognition of the achievement of the whole school. Staff and students work exceptionally hard to ensure that we recognise the diversity of cultures at St James.”

CA Guide Banner

Click here to download PDF: Parent guide on GCSE Exams and Controlled Assessments

The purpose of this booklet is to provide you with information on the assessments and exams that your child will be sitting during their GCSEs at St James:

  •  How many pieces of Controlled Assessment and coursework there are on the GCSE course
  •  What percentage of the final grade is awarded to Controlled Assessment
  •  When Controlled Assessments are due to be completed
  •  How many exams they will sit at the end of the GCSE course
  •  What percentage of the final grade is awarded to the exam(s)

If a subject says that Controlled Assessment is continuous, this means that every lesson students are compiling evidence of their understanding to put in their portfolio which forms part of their final grade.

Parents and their children have access to ShowMyHomework where all homework and controlled assessment details are added by teachers. You can login at www.showmyhomework.co.uk. If you have any problems with logging in, or have any questions about the website, please email Mr Farmer on stephen.farmer@st-james.devon.sch.uk.

In a political landscape where there are significant changes being made to educational policy and the exam system on an annual basis, GCSEs are frequently being modified in terms of their structure and assessment. This document will therefore be updated and released annually (or more frequently if required) to ensure that you are aware of the full picture and the impact of any of these changes on the GCSE course your child is studying.

If you have any further questions on assessment, please contact Miss Robins, Assistant Headteacher, on charlie.robins@st-james.devon.sch.uk or 01392 209922 ext. 287.
