St James School host a Wildlife Conference

On Wednesday 8th October we were lucky enough to host the Devon Wildlife Trust’s annual conference. Here is what they had to say about the day:

‘Our annual conference at St James School Exeter today was AMAZING!!! 14 schools and 127 students came together to learn about local wildlife and to transform the grounds at the school.  Ruppert Goddard from Buglife taught us the value of pollinators before everyone was treated to a superb show from Andy Robinson of the National Marine Aquarium.  On the practical side we were blessed with clear skies and the successful planting of over 300 bulbs, a wildflower meadow, a new butterfly border, a pond and garden clearance and new bug habitats- so much in one day!!’

Our students as always were excellent ambassadors for our school- taking photos, serving drinks, guiding the visitors around the school grounds and helping to set up and clear away equipment.  A huge thank you to everyone involved in making the day such a success!

Please visit the Devon Wildlife Trust website for further details about the day!

St James 34, St Wilfrid’s 32

St James Vs St Wilfrids

St James kicked off their U-15 Rugby season with a thrilling victory over St Wilfrid’s School. Led by skipper Tom Ogg, St James suffered an early set back when they shipped tries within the first five minutes through poor organisation and some missed tackles. As they grew into the game, St James were beginning to look dangerous through the elusive and powerful running of Matt Smith and Ethan Matthews. The forwards were now rucking with precision and securing lots of possession and it came as no surprise that the home side got on the scoresheet thanks to a flowing move, finished nicely by fly half Aidan King, who also slotted the conversion.

The second half began with a bang, St James had their tails up and two stunning bursts, first from Matt Smith, then by scrum half Jordan Sandford enabled the latter to finish off for a try, again expertly finished off by Aidan King. Some tough tackling as ever by Baylie Hicks and Bilbo Wooton led to a turnover and possession and Sandford was again the recipient to score the try. St Wilfrid’s continued to attack and added further tries themselves to set up a tense final five minutes with the scores just in favour of the away team. However, good hands by Ogg, and rapid new winger Tyler Davies enabled a length of the pitch move which resulted in King scoring the winning try. A fantastic victory for St James! Final score 34-32. Training will continue Tuesday after school, 3pm-4pm. New players welcome!
