Ten Tors – Training Day 3 Report 10th December 2011

Ten Tors Training Walk 3 report – Saturday 10th December 2011

Training Walk 3 started in South Zeal at the north end of the moor.

The fairly brutal uphill start to the day soon blew away any cobwebs, and the group set a really good pace up towards Cosdon Hill.

After reaching our first checkpoint early at the stone row by Cosdon, the team endured some slightly boggy terrain on our way to Hound Tor, but good attention to detail and concentration on contouring round and sticking to the route prevented most of the team from getting too wet!

Ten Tors - Training Day 2 Report 19th November 2011

Ten Tors Training Walk 2 – Bellever Tor area

The second Ten Tors training walk took place on Saturday 19th November around Bellever Tor.

A highly motivated bunch turned up at school at 8am on Saturday morning, although there was some confusion about the whereabouts of Tom Gosson, Laura Samways and Amy Stevens. As we waited at school waiting for them to arrive, Mr Deane gradually remembered that he had passed them at the Beacon Heath shops, and vaguely remembered saying something about us picking them up…..20 minutes later…….!

Ten Tors - Training Day 1 Report 16th October 2011

Ten Tors training started in earnest on Sunday 16th October for the highly motivated team of year 10 students who were prepared to give up part of their weekend for an arduous trek across Dartmoor.

The team of nine, accompanied by Mr Foster and Mr Farmer, were ready to go from school by 8am and were raring to leave Haytor car park by 9am. The weather was wet and murky to begin with, but the clouds soon cleared to leave us with fine and sunny weather to complete our 9 mile hike.

Our route took in six tors: Hound Tor, Holwell Tor, Saddle Tor, Top Tor, Pil Tor and Rippon Tor. The walk was completed in good time, with the team setting a fast pace from the outset. Various historical landmarks were spotted, along with plenty of Dartmoor wildlife. The group also learned the importance of choosing routes carefully, particularly when on boggy ground, where some of the team ended up with wet feet (and one with a little more than wet feet, mentioning no names!)

It was an excellent start by the team, and they have hopefully been enthused and motivated to carry on with training during the autumn and winter months ready for the 1633 Challenge and Ten Tors in the spring.

The team were: Brett Booth, Tom Gosson, Louise Hambrook, Laura Hayward, Laura Samways, Kieran Smith, Amy Stevens, Matt Stuart, and Sam Worth
